Discovering What You Really Want To Do With Your Life

The beginning of a new year can really get us thinking as to whether we are truly living our lives in the way we want to, or if we have just become the result of our decision to settle for second best. You may think that being unsure about what you want to do in life is something that people are only supposed to go through during the years directly after finishing education, but many people struggle with these decisions much further into their adult lives. This is no reason to panic, however.

As Bas Luhrmann said in his hit song ‘Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen’, some of the most interesting 40 year olds still don’t know what they want to do with their lives.

Nobody wants to just ‘settle’ in life and there is nothing worse than just doing something because you don’t feel like you have a choice. The fact is that you do, and here are some great ways to find out what it is you really want to be remembered for once you’re gone.

Write Down What’s Important To You –

Whether you are looking to find your dream job, a great hobby or the perfect life partner; deciding upon what means the most to you is a great place to start. You may already know this in your mind but it is so much easier to work with if you have it in a tangible form, written down in front of you.

If you’re looking to change your job then write down all the things you would value in the perfect career and then you have a great focal point to work from. This may include things such as your preferred working hours, how far you would have to travel and any company benefits you would like to be included.

Explore Your Hobbies –

You may be sitting in a job that you don’t feel fulfilled by and wondering whether you could turn one of your passions into a career. The truth is though that the only way you are going to know this for sure is if you actually try it. Not many of us are financially comfortable enough to just give up our job and pursue a hobby, but there are other ways to try this out.

Consider going part-time or really capitalizing on your free time to see if it could be a viable business venture. Working for yourself and doing something you love is sure to increase your fulfillment and if it doesn’t quite pay off then at least you gave it a go.

Don’t Be Afraid To Try Things Out –

Most people may think that having a CV full of different jobs is a red flag to potential employers, but this is not necessarily true. It’s perfectly natural to want to try a few different careers before you know what’s right for you, how else are you supposed to see what you’re missing out on?

As long as you can still explain clearly what you learnt from each job and why you want to try something different, most employers will not hold this against you. If there’s something you really want to do but there are no jobs available then consider volunteering in this field or asking to shadow someone for a short period of time.

Learn More About Yourself With NLP –

A great way to discover what you really want to do in life is to get to know yourself more, and one of the best ways to do this is through neuro-linguistic programming. NLP can help you to strengthen the connection between body and mind, which will ultimately teach you plenty about yourself that you may not have already known. You can use it to build your confidence when searching for the career of your dreams and to set realistic goals for yourself which will aid you to track your progress. By discovering the link between your thoughts and actions you may well be able to discover what it is that truly drives you towards success.
